About This Book

Timothy George’s Galatians: The Christian Standard Commentary is a detailed exegetical and theological study of Paul’s letter that organizes its message around three large movements: history—“No Other Gospel” in Galatians 1:1–2:21; theology—“Justification by Faith” in Galatians 3:1–4:31; and ethics—“Life in the Spirit” in Galatians 5:1–6:18. The revised commentary combines close interpretation of the text with theological synthesis, pastoral application, and sustained attention to the history of Christian interpretation.

The opening chapters treat the historical crisis behind Galatians and the authority of Paul’s apostolic message. George explains Paul’s calling, his relation to the Jerusalem apostles, the dispute over Gentile inclusion, and the confrontation with Peter at Antioch. The governing issue is the truth of the gospel: whether sinners are accepted by God through Christ or whether works of the law and circumcision must be added as conditions of full covenant standing. Galatians 2:15–21 brings this question to a decisive theological point as Paul describes justification by faith and life in relation to the crucified Christ.

Galatians 3–4 forms the theological core of the book. George follows Paul’s appeal to the Galatians’ reception of the Spirit, his use of Abraham, the blessing promised through faith, and the contrast between the law and God’s prior promise. Christ’s bearing of the curse in Galatians 3:10–14 is treated as redemption through the cross and as the way the promised blessing and Spirit come to believers. George explains the function of the law, the priority of promise, and the movement from slavery to sonship. Adoption, inheritance, covenant promise, and the Hagar-Sarah analogy all contribute to Paul’s argument that God’s saving action is grounded in grace and received by faith rather than completed by human works.

The final major section, Galatians 5–6, develops the ethical consequences of justification. Christian freedom must be protected from both legalism and self-indulgence. Freedom in Christ becomes freedom to serve others in love. George gives sustained attention to the conflict between flesh and Spirit, the fruit of the Spirit, the law of Christ, restoration of a fallen believer, bearing burdens, sowing and reaping, and doing good. Life in the Spirit is therefore not an optional addition to Paul’s gospel but the form taken by Christian obedience when believers live out the grace already given in Christ.

George also situates Galatians within the broader history of the church. His introduction considers Paul and his world, the identity of the Galatians, the pastoral character of the letter, and major moments in its Christian interpretation. This historical perspective helps explain why Galatians repeatedly became central in debates about sin, grace, faith, justification, covenant, freedom, and the nature of the gospel.

The commentary is especially relevant to readers asking what justification by faith means, how law and grace relate, why Paul opposed circumcision as a requirement for Gentile believers, how Christians can be free without becoming self-indulgent, and how the Holy Spirit produces a life of love and obedience. George connects doctrine and practice: the free grace announced in the gospel leads through the cross to justification, redemption, adoption, freedom, and Spirit-shaped Christian living.
