About This Book

Colin G. Kruse’s revised Tyndale commentary on John explains the Fourth Gospel as a distinctive witness to Jesus Christ whose long conversations, extended debates, signs, and theological themes call readers to faith. Kruse combines introduction, historical background, and verse-by-verse exposition with attention to the Gospel’s major theological patterns. The commentary is concise enough for pastors and general Bible readers while substantial enough to support serious study of John’s structure, message, and distinctive contribution to New Testament theology.

At the center is Jesus Christ and the question of belief. Kruse shows how John’s Gospel repeatedly presents Jesus’ identity through the narrator’s statements, Jesus’ own claims, his signs, the testimony of witnesses, and the responses of those who encounter him. Belief and unbelief form a recurring contrast, and the signs are highlighted because they are meant to provoke faith. The Gospel’s stated purpose in John 20:30–31 gives this emphasis its clearest expression: readers are summoned to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and through believing to have life in his name.

Kruse gives special prominence to Jesus’ relationship with the Father. The Son is sent by the Father, speaks the Father’s words, does the Father’s works, reveals the Father, and returns to him. This Father-Son relationship is inseparable from the commentary’s treatment of John’s rich Christology: the Word made flesh, the Lamb of God, the Son of Man, the Son of God, the bread of life, the good shepherd, the resurrection and the life, the way, truth and life, and the true vine. These titles and images disclose Jesus’ divine identity, saving mission, and significance for the world.

Faith leads to life, making eternal life another major theological concern. Kruse explains how John connects eternal life with receiving Jesus, believing in him, knowing the Father through the Son, and passing from death to life. The commentary also treats new birth in John 3, living water in John 4 and 7, bread from heaven in John 6, resurrection life in John 11, and the mutual abiding of Christ and his disciples in John 15. These passages answer questions about how spiritual life begins, what it means to believe, and how disciples continue in relationship with Christ.

The Holy Spirit receives substantial treatment, especially in Jesus’ teaching about the Paraclete in the Farewell Discourse. Kruse discusses the Spirit’s role in new birth, life, teaching, witness, conviction, remembrance, and the continuing mission of Jesus’ followers. John 13–17 also develops Christian love, obedience, abiding, prayer, unity, persecution, and faithful witness after Jesus’ departure.

The cross and resurrection bring the Gospel’s Christology and mission to their climax. Kruse’s discussion of Jesus as the Lamb of God includes his sacrificial significance, while the passion narrative presents the death of Jesus within John’s themes of kingship, fulfillment, love, and glorification. The resurrection appearances confirm Jesus’ identity and bring the Gospel’s call to faith to its decisive point.

This commentary is therefore especially useful to readers asking who Jesus is in John, why belief is central to the Gospel, what the signs are meant to reveal, what eternal life means, how Jesus relates to the Father, what John teaches about the Holy Spirit, how new birth and abiding fit Christian discipleship, and how the cross and resurrection complete Jesus’ mission. Kruse’s revised edition provides an accessible bridge between close textual study and the theological questions that make John enduringly important for Christian faith and life.
