Expositions of Holy Scripture: Ezekiel

by Alexander Maclaren

()

Alexander Maclaren’s five Ezekiel expositions move from hidden idolatry and complacency toward God’s promises of cleansing, a new heart, the indwelling Spirit, Israel’s restoration, and life flowing from His presence. Through Ezekiel 8, 12, 36, 37, and 47, he turns prophetic imagery into searching teaching on sin, sanctification, spiritual renewal, hope, and divine life.

About This Book

Expositions of Holy Scripture: Ezekiel is Alexander Maclaren’s compact collection of five selected expositions from Ezekiel 8:12, 12:27, 36:25–38, 37:1–14, and 47:1. It is not a survey of the entire prophetic book. Its strength lies instead in sustained treatment of these passages, which together move from concealed sin and resistance to God’s warning toward cleansing, inward renewal, the life-giving work of the Holy Spirit, Israel’s restoration, and life flowing from God’s dwelling place.

“Chambers of Imagery,” from Ezekiel 8:12, begins with the prophet’s vision of secret idolatry within the temple precincts. Maclaren turns the hidden chambers into a picture of the inner life: outward religion can coexist with concealed images, desires, and loyalties that contradict devotion to God. The sermon addresses readers concerned with hidden sin, self-deception, and the difference between public profession and the actual contents of the heart.

“A Common Mistake and Lame Excuse,” from Ezekiel 12:27, exposes another form of resistance. The hearers do not need to deny the prophetic warning outright if they can make it harmless by pushing fulfillment into a distant future. Maclaren applies this to the human tendency to postpone the practical force of divine warning. Prophecy, judgment, and eternity are meant to create present response rather than safe speculation about another time.

The center of the volume lies in Ezekiel 36–37. Ezekiel 36:25–38 receives substantial exposition of cleansing, a new heart and spirit, the indwelling Spirit of God, and an obedience produced by divine action within. Maclaren explicitly distinguishes forgiveness from the work of sanctification and insists that true holiness cannot be manufactured by external regulation. God must cleanse, renew, and put His Spirit within His people. The passage therefore addresses readers asking how inward spiritual change actually occurs and why new conduct requires more than moral pressure.

“The Dry Bones and the Spirit of Life,” on Ezekiel 37:1–14, treats the valley first in its prophetic relation to Israel’s national restoration. Maclaren does not use the vision as a proof text for bodily resurrection; instead, he follows Ezekiel’s own explanation and then draws out the wider spiritual principle that God’s Word and Spirit can bring life where human resources are helpless. Organized form without divine breath remains dead. Hope rests in God’s power to restore and enliven.

“The River of Life,” from Ezekiel 47:1, completes the movement. The stream flowing from the temple and deepening as it goes becomes a prophetic picture of divine life and blessing proceeding from God’s presence. Where the river goes, barrenness gives way to fertility and healing. Maclaren connects the imagery with God’s saving grace, the spread and deepening of spiritual life, Christ’s language of living water, and the final biblical river of life.

Taken together, the five sermons present Ezekiel as a prophet whose images search the conscience and anchor hope in what God Himself promises to do. The volume serves readers looking for teaching on hidden idolatry, ignored warnings, cleansing from sin, sanctification, the new heart, the Holy Spirit, the valley of dry bones, Israel’s restoration, and the river of life. Its governing practical question is how God brings living spiritual reality where sin, complacency, or spiritual death has made human effort insufficient.
