About This Book

Bounds on Prayer & Spiritual Warfare: 5-in-1 combines five E. M. Bounds titles selected to unite his teaching on prayer with his treatment of the Christian’s conflict with Satan: Prayer and Spiritual Warfare, The Reality of Prayer, Power Through Prayer, Guide to Spiritual Warfare, and Equipped: The Weapon of Prayer. The result is an omnibus in which prayer is presented both as communion with God and as a primary means by which believers, ministers, and churches stand against spiritual opposition.

The prayer material begins with the nature and reality of prayer itself. Bounds presents prayer as access to God, worship, fellowship, petition, intercession, and dependence. The Reality of Prayer gives sustained attention to Jesus Christ as both teacher and example of prayer. The Lord’s Model Prayer, His prayers during His ministry, John 17, and Gethsemane are used to show prayer as central to the life of the Son. The Holy Spirit is then developed as the believer’s Helper in prayer, making dependence upon God a living spiritual reality rather than a technique.

Power Through Prayer and The Weapon of Prayer turn strongly toward ministry and the Church. Bounds repeatedly argues that preaching, Christian leadership, organization, talent, and activity cannot substitute for prayer. Ministers need private prayer, spiritual preparation, and the prayers of the people. The Church advances when praying people bring God into the work; prayerlessness weakens ministry even when outward activity remains impressive.

The Weapon of Prayer broadens this principle into the believer’s whole Christian life. Bounds treats prayer as essential to God’s work in the world and as necessary to personal spiritual vitality, service, and perseverance. Biblical examples and later Christian examples show prayer affecting ministry, communities, revival, and the progress of the gospel. Prayer is therefore described as a weapon because it brings divine power to bear where human ability is insufficient.

The warfare sections make the enemy explicit. Guide to Spiritual Warfare is Whitaker House’s retitled version of Bounds’s Satan: His Personality, Power and Overthrow. Satan is presented as a personal spiritual adversary with intelligence, power, methods, and organized opposition to God’s purposes. Bounds examines the devil’s activity in the world and his particular opposition to the Church, warning that spiritual conflict includes deception, temptation, compromise, discouragement, and attacks on faith.

Satan’s methods receive substantial attention. The adversary works through lies, false appearances, distorted desires, spiritual stagnation, self-confidence, and conditions in which believers become careless or unwatchful. Bounds emphasizes that the enemy does not rely only on open evil; deception can appear religious, plausible, or even attractive. This makes spiritual discernment and vigilance necessary parts of warfare.

The believer’s defense is developed through resistance, faith, truth, righteousness, salvation, Scripture, watchfulness, and prayer. Ephesians 6 provides the major biblical image of the armor of God, while James and 1 Peter supply direct commands to resist the devil. Bounds connects these defenses with the larger prayer teaching of the omnibus: prayer is not an isolated emergency measure but part of a life already grounded in God, Scripture, obedience, and dependence upon the Holy Spirit.

Because the collection contains both prayer books and warfare books, it addresses a broad range of reader questions: how to pray, how Jesus prayed, how the Holy Spirit helps in prayer, why ministers need prayer, how prayer strengthens the Church, who Satan is, how his strategies work, where believers are vulnerable, what the armor of God means, how to resist temptation and deception, and how prayer functions within spiritual warfare.

The unifying principle is dependence upon God. Whether Bounds is discussing private prayer, preaching, the prayer life of Jesus, the Holy Spirit, Satanic deception, or the armor of God, he repeatedly contrasts spiritual effectiveness with confidence in natural strength. Prayer and warfare meet in the call to stand before God, receive what He supplies, and resist the enemy through faith and obedience rather than self-reliance.
