The Warfare with Satan
Jessie Penn-Lewis traces the believer’s conflict with Satan from the adversary’s kingdom and methods to Christ’s decisive victory at Calvary. She shows how the Cross, resurrection life, the armor of God, prayer, Scripture, and union with the risen Christ equip believers to resist deception, discern counterfeit guidance, and stand in spiritual victory.

About This Book
The Warfare with Satan: And the Way of Victory is Jessie Penn-Lewis’s concise, systematic treatment of the conflict between the people of God and the powers of darkness. The book moves from the risen Christ’s call to overcome, through a biblical study of Satan’s kingdom and methods, to Christ’s victory at Calvary, the liberation of Satan’s captives, resurrection-side warfare, discernment of deceptive guidance, and the believer’s position in union with the exalted Lord.
Revelation 1–3 establishes the opening framework. John sees the risen Christ in the midst of the churches, and each message ends with a call to hear what the Spirit says and to overcome. Penn-Lewis begins from the accomplished victory of Christ rather than from fear of the adversary: the Lord who conquered death and Satan calls His people to enter practically into what He has secured. The promise of sharing Christ’s throne provides the book’s final horizon as well as its opening motivation.
The next part gathers biblical teaching about Satan’s character, names, subjects, organized government, and religious counterfeits. Penn-Lewis presents principalities and powers as an ordered kingdom opposed to God and traces the adversary’s activity through temptation, deception, idolatry, false religion, spiritual counterfeits, and control over human beings. Passages from Daniel, Isaiah, Ezekiel, the Gospels, Second Corinthians, Second Thessalonians, Ephesians, and Revelation help explain why spiritual conflict includes both open evil and apparently religious forms of deception. Satan’s appearance as an angel of light is especially important for understanding counterfeit spiritual guidance.
Calvary is the decisive turning point. Penn-Lewis traces the promise of the serpent’s defeat from Genesis to its fulfillment in Jesus Christ and presents the Cross as God’s judgment upon the adversary’s power and upon the fallen ground through which he works. Colossians 2:15, Hebrews, the Gospels, and related New Testament passages contribute to her presentation of Christ’s triumph over principalities and powers. The resurrection and exaltation of Christ confirm that victory and provide the believer’s new ground of life.
The book then asks how people are actually liberated from the power of darkness. Acts 26 and the proclamation of the gospel are used to show people being turned from Satan’s authority to God. For believers, the Cross also deals with the self-centered and fleshly ground of the old life. Freedom is therefore connected not only with external deliverance but with an inward transition from the old ground to dependence upon the risen Christ.
Ephesians becomes the principal framework for practical warfare. The believer is raised and seated with Christ above principalities and powers, yet is also commanded to stand and wrestle. Ephesians 6:10–18 supplies the armor of God, including truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, the Word of God, prayer, and watchfulness. Warfare is carried on in dependence upon the Holy Spirit and from the position Christ has already secured, not through natural force or self-confidence.
A major practical section treats the adversary’s subtler wiles concerning revelations, the voice of the Lord, guidance, and Christian liberty. Penn-Lewis warns that supernatural character does not by itself prove divine origin. Counterfeit light, false impressions, isolated uses of Scripture, passivity, and mistaken ideas of guidance can all mislead believers. Discernment requires the written Word, the known character of God, a renewed and active mind, the witness and fruit of the Holy Spirit, and a will surrendered to God without becoming passive.
The final chapter gathers these themes into the believer’s position of victory in union with the risen and exalted Christ. The book addresses readers asking who Satan is, how his kingdom operates, what the Cross accomplished against the powers of darkness, what the armor of God means, how to resist the devil, how to test spiritual guidance, and how resurrection life and union with Christ become the practical basis of spiritual victory.
